Gold On-Chain: Venus Lists XAUm, Secured by Chainlink, Bringing Real-World Assets to BNB Chain
For decades, gold has been one of the most trusted stores of value in the world.
But in DeFi, it has largely remained outside the system — inaccessible as true collateral without synthetic workarounds or custodial wrappers. With the listing of XAUm on Venus Protocol, that changes.
Venus is listing XAUm — Asia’s leading tokenized gold product issued by Matrixdock — as a supported collateral asset on BNB Chain. Leveraging Chainlink SmartData Feeds, XAUm brings institutional-grade gold exposure directly into Venus’s lending markets. This is Venus’s first RWA listing, and it sets the template for what RWA onboarding looks like on BNB Chain.
What is XAUm?
XAUm is a tokenized gold product issued by Matrixdock, the RWA platform of Matrixport — one of Asia’s leading digital asset financial services firms. Each XAUm token represents one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of 99.99% pure gold meeting London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) standards. Gold is fully allocated, securely vaulted in Asia, and independently audited.
Highlights
- LBMA-Only Supply Chain — Sourced, refined and vaulted within the LBMA ecosystem, working with accredited partners including Heraeus, Metalor, Brinks and Malca Amit.
- Fully Allocated Physical Gold — Each token is backed 1:1 by allocated physical gold. Token holders can independently verify holdings against underlying bar records online.
- Asia Physical Redemption — Physical redemption available in Singapore and Hong Kong, starting from 1kg bars, aligned with institutional bullion market standards.
- Institutional Transparency — Monthly vault statements are published and logged on-chain. Bi-annual audits are conducted by Bureau Veritas, auditor of GLD, the world’s largest gold ETF.
- Industry Recognition — First gold token issuer accepted by Singapore Bullion Market Association and a member of Hong Kong Gold Exchange.
With XAUm, holders gain direct price exposure to gold with the composability and transferability of an on-chain asset.
Matrixdock is one of the most credible RWA issuers in the Asian market, with a proven track record across multiple tokenized asset products and deep integration with institutional distribution networks. Bringing XAUm to Venus is not just a product listing — it is a signal about the caliber of RWA partners Venus is building with.
What It Means to Use XAUm on Venus
When XAUm is supplied to Venus as collateral, users can borrow against their gold-backed position without selling the underlying asset. This unlocks a set of use cases that were previously unavailable to gold holders in DeFi:
Capital efficiency: Gold holders can put their XAUm to work, accessing on-chain liquidity while maintaining their exposure to gold’s price performance. No need to sell; no need to leave DeFi.
Non-correlated collateral: XAUm behaves differently from crypto-native assets. Its price is driven by macroeconomic conditions, inflation expectations, and safe-haven demand — introducing genuine diversification into Venus’s collateral ecosystem.
Institutional familiarity: Gold is the most universally understood asset class in the world. Its presence as collateral on Venus makes the protocol immediately legible to a far wider audience, including institutions that hold gold but are newer to DeFi lending markets.
Secured by Chainlink: Why the Oracle Layer Matters
For any RWA to function safely within a lending protocol, price discovery must be reliable, manipulation-resistant, and continuously updated. This is not a minor technical detail — it is the foundation on which collateral ratios, liquidation thresholds, and risk parameters are built.
A tokenized asset is only as trustworthy as the price feed behind it.
Venus has integrated Chainlink SmartData Feeds as the oracle infrastructure for XAUm. Chainlink is the industry-standard decentralized oracle network, securing hundreds of billions of dollars in DeFi value globally. For tokenized real-world assets like XAUm, Chainlink sources pricing data directly from the token issuer and delivers it tamper-proof on-chain through a decentralized oracle network.
For Venus users, this means XAUm’s collateral value is always grounded in current market reality. For institutions evaluating Venus as an RWA venue, Chainlink represents a shared, audited, and battle-tested infrastructure standard that reduces the trust assumptions required to engage.
The First Step In Venus’s RWA Strategy
XAUm is Venus’s first RWA listing, but the thinking behind it is deliberate. Gold was chosen because it is the most universally understood store of value, has the deepest liquidity of any commodity, and represents a natural entry point for institutional capital exploring on-chain collateral for the first time. It is the right first step.
It also establishes a model. The combination of a credible, regulated issuer (Matrixdock), a trusted oracle infrastructure (Chainlink), and a deep lending market (Venus on BNB Chain) is the template Venus intends to apply to further RWA listings as the category matures.
Tokenized treasuries, private credit, and other real-world instruments are on the horizon. Venus is building the infrastructure — and demonstrating the execution — to be the venue of record for each of them as they arrive on BNB Chain.
